Airport Transfers vs Parking: Which Saves You More Money?

· · 1 min read

Should you drive and park, or take a transfer? The answer depends on distance, group size, and trip length.

When Parking Wins

If you live more than 30 miles from the airport and are travelling for over a week, parking is almost always cheaper. A 14-day Park & Ride at Heathrow costs £50-60. A return taxi from Reading would cost £80-120.

Parking also wins for families — one car, one fee, vs per-person transfer costs.

When Transfers Win

If you live within 15 miles, a transfer can be cheaper, especially for short trips. A shared shuttle from central London to Heathrow costs from £10pp. For a solo 3-day trip: £20 return vs £25-30 for parking.

The Hybrid Option

Drive to a nearby station and take the express service. Heathrow Express from Paddington (£25), Gatwick Express from Victoria (£20), Stansted Express from Liverpool Street (£20). For 2+ travellers, compare with a private transfer.

Our Recommendation

For most suburban UK travellers, driving and parking is most cost-effective. Only consider transfers if you live close to the airport or are travelling solo on a short trip.
