Stansted sits just off the M11 in Essex, 30 miles north of central London. Single terminal, no terminal split to worry about, and a dedicated airport access road from Junction 8 of the M11. The driving experience is straightforward, the parking choice is the bigger decision. Here is the operational guide for driving to Stansted in 2026.

Which terminal? Just one.

Unlike Heathrow or Gatwick, Stansted is a single-terminal airport. There is no North/South or T2/T3/T4/T5 split to worry about. Park anywhere on the airport, check in centrally, then take a free transit shuttle to your boarding satellite (1, 2 or 3).

Routes by direction

From central and north London

M11 northbound from Junction 4 (North Circular). Leave at Junction 8 (Stansted exit). The exit road feeds directly into the airport, signposted for all car parks.

From the south coast and Kent

M25 anticlockwise to Junction 27, then M11 northbound to Junction 8. M25 J27 is a known bottleneck at peak; build in 20 minutes contingency.

From the M40 / Oxford direction

M40 east to M25 anticlockwise to J27, then M11. Or A14 east via Cambridge for travellers north of Oxford.

From East Anglia and Cambridge

M11 southbound from Junction 14 (Cambridge), leave at Junction 8.

From Essex and Hertfordshire

Local A-roads to M11. The A120 connects east-west across north Essex into the airport approach road.

The £10 drop-off rule for 2026

Stansted Express Set Down forecourt is £10 for up to 15 minutes, increased from £7 on 19 March 2026. Stay 15 to 30 minutes and the charge jumps to £28. ANPR enforced, payable online by midnight the day after your visit. For the full breakdown and the free alternative, see our Stansted drop-off charges guide.

The free drop-off alternative

Park in the Mid Stay or Long Stay car parks and use the free shuttle into the terminal. The first 20 minutes at Mid Stay are free, so a 15-minute drop-off costs nothing. The trade-off: 25 to 40 minute round trip for the driver versus 10 to 15 minutes for the forecourt. The maths works for travellers with time.

Stansted Express alternative

If you are travelling solo from central London with one carry-on, the Stansted Express train from Liverpool Street takes 51 minutes and costs £24.70 single. For Ryanair flights with no checked baggage this often beats driving + parking on total cost. Off the table for families or heavy luggage.

Traffic timing

  • 04:00 to 06:30 weekday mornings: easy traffic, peak Ryanair departure pulse, parking forecourts busy.
  • 09:30 to 14:00: easiest window.
  • 15:30 to 19:30 weekday evenings: M11 evening peak from London commuter traffic.
  • Late evening 20:00 onwards: easy traffic but shuttle queues build at Long Stay.

Add 30 minutes contingency on any school-holiday Saturday, particularly Saturday of summer half-term.

Where to park once you arrive

Short Stay multi-storey (premium, 2 to 3 min walk), Mid Stay (close-ish, 3 to 5 min shuttle), Long Stay (cheapest, 5 to 10 min shuttle), and off-airport operators reachable via the A120. For the full comparison, see Cheapest Stansted Airport Parking in 2026.

Five mistakes that cost you time on arrival

  1. Driving past Junction 8. The next junction is well past the airport; turning back adds 15 minutes.
  2. Walking up to Long Stay without booking. 200%+ price gap to pre-booked.
  3. Forgetting the £10 drop-off charge. £10 every visit, £28 if you stay over 15 minutes, plus the £100 PCN if you miss the midnight-next-day payment.
  4. Not allowing time for transit shuttle to your satellite. Once airside, the shuttle to Sat 2 or Sat 3 adds 5 to 10 minutes.
  5. Cutting M25/M11 timing too fine. J27 is unreliable. Build 30 minutes contingency.
