Airport lounges are one of the most over-marketed and under-honest parts of UK travel. Operators publish glossy photos of empty seats and cocktails; the reality is more mixed. This guide covers the lounge market at the airports we work with for 2026, with current prices, what you actually get, and which lounges are worth the spend.
What you are paying for
An airport lounge gives you four things in varying combinations:
- A quieter seat. Lounges are less crowded than the main terminal, particularly during peak hours.
- Food and drink. Buffet at most mid-range lounges; à la carte at premium ones. Free alcohol is standard at the upper tiers.
- Wi-Fi and workspace. Better than the terminal's free Wi-Fi at most lounges, with proper desks and power sockets.
- Showers (sometimes). Most premium lounges; some mid-range ones at the bigger airports.
The real value depends on how long you are at the airport. For a 90-minute pre-departure window, a lounge is rarely worth £30+. For a 4-hour layover or a long-haul early arrival, it pays for itself in food alone.

What to look for in a lounge
- Hot food. Many cheaper lounges only offer cold buffets. If you want something hot before a long-haul flight, check the menu.
- Showers. Available at most premium lounges; not at the basic mid-range options. Particularly useful before overnight departures.
- Kids policy. Most lounges admit children, with discounted rates for under-12s and free for under-2s. Some are firmly adult-only; others welcome families.
- Alcohol policy. Most lounges include drinks; a few cap quantities or charge separately for premium spirits.
- Booking window. Most lounges allow 2 to 3 hours of access from your booked entry time. Booking too early means you cannot access the lounge until the window opens.
Membership-based lounge access
Several lounges accept Priority Pass, LoungeKey, DragonPass and American Express Platinum. Coverage changes quarterly; always check your card's app for current eligibility before relying on it. Major omissions in 2026:
- 1903 Lounge at Manchester T3 is NOT in Priority Pass.
- Escape Lounges have variable Priority Pass coverage by airport and time.
- Aspire Lounges are usually in DragonPass and LoungeKey but not always Priority Pass.
Free alternatives
If you have not paid for lounge access:
- Luton's PreBook Security: free 30-minute security slot, separate from lounge access. Full guide.
- Manchester's TimeSlot: free 15-minute security window. Full guide.
- Quiet zones: most major UK terminals have signed quiet zones with seating, away from the busier shops.
- Restaurants and cafes: sit-down food at airport restaurants is often cheaper than lounge access for short visits.
Frequently asked questions
How long can I stay in an airport lounge?
Most allow up to 3 hours from your booked entry. Beyond that, you usually pay for additional time.
Can I bring kids?
At most lounges yes, with discounted rates for under-12s and free for under-2s. Some are firmly adult-only; check before booking.
Which lounge brand is best?
It depends on the airport. Premium experiences (champagne, à la carte, dedicated chef) come from 1903 at Manchester or No1 at Luton. Solid mid-range comes from Escape and Aspire across all our covered airports.
Can I get to a lounge if I have only carry-on?
Yes, lounges are airside, accessible after security. You walk through security, find the lounge, present your boarding pass plus access code.
