Booking a hotel the night before a early flight, then paying separately to leave the car somewhere, is how most people do it. It is usually not the cheapest way, and it is almost never the simplest. Here is how airport hotel and parking packages actually work in the UK, when they save money, and when they do not.

What is an airport hotel with parking?

It is one booking that covers a room at or near the airport the night before you fly, plus parking for the whole time you are away. The car stays at the hotel or a linked car park, and you either walk, take the hotel shuttle or take the airport transfer in the morning. In the trade it is called park and stay, and at some airports it is genuinely cheaper than buying the two things separately.

Is it cheaper to book airport parking and hotel together?

Often, but not always, and it depends on how long you are away. The package price is usually built from a discounted room plus a long-stay parking rate. On a short trip the room dominates the price, so a package can look expensive next to parking alone. On a two-week holiday the parking side is where the money is, and bundling tends to win.

When a package is worth it

  • Early departures. Anything before about 7am usually means leaving home in the middle of the night. A room removes that.
  • Long trips. The longer the car sits there, the more the parking element matters and the better a bundled rate looks.
  • A long drive to the airport. If you are more than a couple of hours away, the night before is a safety decision as much as a money one.
  • Families. Getting children to an airport at 4am is its own kind of holiday, and rarely the good kind.

When to skip it and just park

  • Your flight is late morning or afternoon and you live within an hour.
  • You are away two or three nights, where the room is most of the cost.
  • You have a lift to the airport, in which case you want drop-off charges, not parking.

What to check before you book

Three things catch people out. First, how many days of parking are included: some packages cover 8 or 15 days and charge for extra days at a worse rate. Second, where the car actually sits, which is not always at the hotel. Third, how you get to the terminal in the morning, whether that is a walk, a free shuttle or a paid transfer, and how early it runs.

Do you have to stay the night to get the parking?

Yes. The room is the reason the parking rate is discounted, so a package is not a way of buying cheap long-stay parking on its own. If you only want parking, book parking.

Can you book a hotel and parking in one payment?
