The short answer: which car park you pick saves you far more than when you book it. Across the 175 car parks we price at 16 UK airports, the same eight day stay ranges from £53.48 to £313.98. Booking earlier moves the price at fewer than half of those airports. Choosing differently moves it at all of them.

What is the cheapest way to park at a UK airport?
Park and ride, at almost every airport, almost every time. You leave the car in an off-airport compound and a shuttle takes you to the terminal. Of the 175 products we compare, park and ride holds the cheapest slot at 12 of the 16 airports with stock.
The exceptions matter though. At East Midlands, meet and greet is cheaper than parking it yourself (£71.98 against £70.97, near enough level). At Newcastle and Cardiff there is no independent park and ride estate at all, so the airport's own car park is the cheap option and the floor sits near £15 a night instead of £7.
Is airport parking cheaper if you book early?
Usually not, and this is the most expensive myth in the category.
We price the identical stay at four booking windows, at every airport, every hour. The result: booking a month ahead is meaningfully cheaper at only 6 of the 16 airports we track. At 6 more the operator runs a fixed rate card and the price never moves. At 4 it is actually cheaper closer to the date.
Where it does pay, it pays enormously. Stansted is the clearest case in Britain:

That is a 52% saving for deciding a month earlier. At Edinburgh the same test came out the other way: £78.97 booked a week out against £88.97 booked a month out.
The practical rule: book as soon as you know your dates, because spaces run out even where prices do not. But do not let anyone tell you the price is about to climb. At ten of sixteen UK airports, it is not.
Which UK airport is cheapest to park at?
Manchester and Glasgow, and it is not close.

Notice the pattern in the right hand column. The number of car parks predicts the price better than the size of the airport does. Manchester has 26 competing operators and a £53 floor. Newcastle has 5 and a £114 floor. If your route is flexible, that gap is worth more than most fare differences.
Does a longer trip cost less per night?
Substantially, and almost nobody prices it in. Car parks charge for the space, not the night, so the fixed cost of taking a bay out of circulation is spread across however long you stay.
The same Glasgow car park, in the same week of checking:
- 3 nights: £14.16 a night
- 8 nights: £6.93 a night
- 15 nights: £4.77 a night
A three-fold difference in the nightly rate from one car park. This is why a per-night price quoted without a trip length attached to it tells you almost nothing, and why comparing "from £X a day" across sites is meaningless unless they are using the same stay.
What is the most expensive mistake people make?
Two, and both are avoidable in about ninety seconds.
Turning up without a booking. Driving to the barrier and taking a ticket is the dearest way to park at every airport we cover. This is the comparison the "save up to 70%" claims are really making, and on that one narrow point they are right.
Booking short stay for a holiday. Short stay is priced for someone meeting a flight for an hour. At Stansted it runs to £231.98 for eight days against £112.48 for park and ride. It is not a trap so much as a product being used for the wrong job.
What charges are not in the advertised price?
The ones the airport collects directly, which no comparison site shows because no comparison site receives them. We currently record six across the car parks we sell:
- Bristol: £8.50 at the barrier on exit, £17.00 for the return trip.
- Manchester: a £16.00 exit levy, plus a separate £12.80 access fee.
- Heathrow: a £10.00 access charge.
Then there are drop-off tariffs if someone takes you: Manchester charges £5.50 for five minutes and £25.00 the moment you pass ten. Stansted is £10.00 for up to fifteen.
A "never beaten on price" promise can be completely accurate and still leave you £17 lighter at a barrier on the way home. Whatever site you use, the number that matters is what leaves your account in total.
Does meet and greet cost much more than park and ride?
Less than most people assume, and at some airports nothing at all. Across everything we price, park and ride runs £53.48 to £253.92 and meet and greet £75.48 to £313.98. The ranges overlap heavily: a mid-priced meet and greet frequently costs less than an expensive park and ride at the same airport.
At Bristol the cheapest meet and greet was £79.48 against £75.49 for park and ride, a difference of about £4 to hand your keys over at the terminal instead of taking a shuttle. With a car seat, two suitcases and a 6am flight, that is money most parents would spend twice.
How do you check a parking price is actually good?
Four questions, and they work on any site including this one.
- Is the booking fee inside the price shown, or added at checkout? Ours is a flat £1.49 and it is already in every figure on screen.
- Does it name the operator? If you cannot see whose car park it is, you are buying a decision rather than a space.
- Does it warn you about charges paid on the day? Barrier fees and access charges are real money and sit outside every advertised price.
- Can you check its numbers? Ours are published as an open dataset under CC BY 4.0. Use it, quote it, hold us to it.
What actually saves money, in order?
- Compare every operator at your airport, not one. The spread within a single airport is routinely bigger than the gap between airports.
- Choose park and ride unless there is a reason not to. It holds the cheapest slot at 12 of 16 UK airports.
- Book as soon as you have dates, for the space rather than the price.
- Check what you pay on the day, not just at checkout.
- Ignore urgency messaging. At ten of sixteen UK airports the price is the same or lower closer to the date.
